While walking down the grocery aisle, have you ever noticed how many people are in their own world? You can have 20 people in a waiting room, and more than half are on their phones. Others have their eyes buried in a magazine or wandering through space, avoiding meeting eye contact. But have you ever considered what would happen if you lifted your eyes to look around purposefully?
Imagine the conversations we miss by scrolling through Instagram in the Chick-fil-a line. Think of the people we can meet, laugh with, support, and create a friendship with when we put aside distractions and instead interact with the beings we were put on Earth with.
There are hurting people all around us who are begging for help. When we strike up a conversation, offer a smile, or simply look people in the eyes, we take advantage of a chance to be a helping hand.
With opened, searching eyes, you won't miss seeing an elderly man bending down to tie his shoe. With opened eyes, you can offer to tie the shoe for him. When we live life with this mentality, we provide help to others, but this also adds value to our life with all we receive.
We can even take this lesson into our own homes. How often do you hide out in your room to get away from your mom while she is doing the dishes? Or put on your earbuds to ignore your brother, spouse, grandma, or child when they might be bugging you for attention. In mundane moments, we might not take the time to talk with our loved ones and show them our love. But what if we do that now? Let's look our family in the eyes to ask them how they are doing, not just to act as if we care but to genuinely see how we can brighten their day, lighten their load, or hug them.
Let's see what we can do with our eyes open!
