“You aren’t leaving the table until all your broccoli is gone, honey.”
“You have to eat all your fruit off that plate before you are allowed to get dessert!”
We have all heard these statements before! Statements reflecting parental desires to fill their children nutritionally. Why was that so important to our parents? Why did/do we need fruits and veggies? That was a question I asked myself when I was told I had to eat the nutritious meal my mother cooked for dinner, instead of a box of cheez-its or a brownie.
The definition of nutrition is “the process of providing or obtaining the food necessary for health and growth”. Okay, that is what my parents were trying to do! They were wanting to make sure I had the right type of food to provide energy for my body to grow.
When we are young, we can be oblivious to, well, pretty much everything! Especially money. One of the biggest lessons I have learned while growing up is grasping the concept of money. I have quickly realized that living is expensive, items cost way more than I thought they would! Especially nutritious foods. Yet, it is so important to obtain the right amount of protein, vegetables, fruits, dairy, etc. on a daily basis. How do we do this?
This can be difficult, and when you add in all the other factors of life you have to pay for, such as bills, gas, and child care, it can seem almost impossible! It may seem more convenient to fill your grocery cart with foods that are not the best fuel for your body, but we must be careful. We can do this! We can learn ways to fill our family with nutritious foods, without emptying our bank accounts! Our bodies will be thanking us, too!
Don’t be discouraged! It may be difficult, but not impossible!
The Bluebird has partnered with an amazing program through the USDA called WIC which stands for Women, Infants, and Children. The WIC program strives “to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutrition risk by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating, and referrals to health care.”
We acknowledge that it is hard to add healthy eating into your budget, and that is exactly why we are here to help! We value the health of you, your children, and your family and want to make sure you are all getting what you need in order for your body to be fully charged. You can apply for WIC today or come in for an appointment on the bus and we can help you apply there!
